Characteristics of Red Spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) Encroachment at Two Central Appalachian Heathland Study Areas

چکیده
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, intensive land use nearly eliminated red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) throughout portions of West Virginia (WV). Red has been slow to regenerate on mountaintop heathland barrens surrounding Canaan Valley, (WV), little is known about nature encroachment. Using field surveys, geospatial data, statistical modelling, objectives were 1) characterize compare encroachment at two upland heath study areas in (Bear Rocks Cabin Mountain), 2) percent cover major ground types associated with regeneration sites order elucidate biotic interactions, 3) model biophysical correlates using data modelling. count was similar both areas, but there substantially more seedlings saplings Mountain. Modelling revealed a positive relationship between rock negative stand distance.

Seasonal air and soil temperature effects on photosynthesis in red spruce (Picea rubens) saplings.
Net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were measured in ten red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) saplings, growing near Ithaca, New York, throughout the early spring and late-fall growing periods. Gas exchange and daily minimum and maximum soil and air temperatures were also measured. Linear regression analysis showed that rates of net photosynthesis were positively correlated with both minimum...
متن کاملSeparating the effects of tree size and meristem maturation on shoot development of grafted scions of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.).
In order to separate the effects of size and meristem maturation on age-related changes in shoot growth behaviour, a reciprocal grafting experiment was conducted involving juvenile (J), mid-age (MA) and old-growth (OG) red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) trees as both scion donors and rootstock. The effects of rootstock and scion age on vegetative growth, foliar morphology and reproductive developm...

Red spruce−Fraser fir forests are geographically limited to high elevations in the Appalachian Mountains (USA) and are considered to be endangered in the USA. We investigated the successional status and radial growth patterns in the heavily disturbed red spruce Picea rubens Sarg. and Fraser fir Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir. forest of Roan Mountain, Tennessee and North Carolina. This study elucida...
متن کاملHighly Informative Single-Copy Nuclear Microsatellite DNA Markers Developed Using an AFLP-SSR Approach in Black Spruce (Picea mariana) and Red Spruce (P. rubens)
BACKGROUND Microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are highly informative molecular markers for various biological studies in plants. In spruce (Picea) and other conifers, the development of single-copy polymorphic genomic microsatellite markers is quite difficult, owing primarily to the large genome size and predominance of repetitive DNA sequences throughout the genome. We have deve...
